Poetry Books

We recently completed our poetry unit.  The class wrote four poems: acrostic, portrait, haiku, and two words on a line poem.  The students also created artwork to go with each poem.  Our poems were put together in booklets and include an About the Author page.  We invited in Mrs. Vickerman's 1st graders to share our poems with them.  The poem books are beautiful, and the students love reading each other's booklets!

Opinion Writing: The Best Part of Me Writing

For our most recent opinion writing piece, the students completed these beautiful projects detailing what they most liked about themselves.  Of course the best parts of them are things we can't see and photograph- their kind hearts, willingness to help others, smart brains, and so much more.  For this project, they needed to choose a part of them that we could see and photograph.

This was a step by step process.  The students brainstormed their ideas in a bubble map.  They began their writing with a topic sentence and then put their brainstormed ideas into complete sentences.  The writing was completed with a conclusion sentence.  We added a black and white photo to go with our writing.  These opinion pieces range from humorous to heartfelt!  I love seeing them up in the hallway with visitors stopping by to read them!

What is an Adjective?

We have been learning about adjectives all year long.  We know that an adjective describes a noun.  We've been using adjectives to describe different characters we've met in the stories we've read.  Recently we used adjectives to describe ourselves.  We started the lesson by brainstorming adjectives about one of our sweet girls and then stuck them right to her!

The students then made an adjective person to describe themselves.  They used adjectives such as smart, kind, fast, cool, athletic, funny, creative, and so many more.  Second graders, you are the sweetest!

A Special Place to Keep Our Writing

In the last few weeks the students have been finishing up decorating their writing binders.  They brought in pictures and stickers and special items to use to make their writing binder unique and special to them.  The students love sharing pictures of their family and pets with each other.  Their binders also serve as inspiration when they got stuck on a writing topic.  This class especially loves to write, and they are filling their binders full of special moments with the people who cover their binders!

You're Finally Here! Books

We just finished up our books, "You're Finally Here!  What Took You so Long?"  These books were kicked off on the first day of school after reading, "You're Finally Here!" by Melanie Watt.

The students brainstormed their ideas on a bubble map.  They wrote down three things they did this summer that kept them away from 2nd grade for so long!  Then these ideas were written in complete sentences.  The students learned that a sentence is a complete idea with a capital and end mark.  The final page of the book is what the students are looking forward to in 2nd grade.

We conferenced their sentences, and they started working on their own books with illustrations.  Way to go on your very first book of 2nd grade!
