You're Finally Here! Books

 We just finished up our books, "You're Finally Here!  What Took You so Long?"  These books were kicked off on the first day of school after reading, "You're Finally Here!" by Melanie Watt.

The students brainstormed their ideas on a bubble map.  They wrote down three things they did this summer that kept them away from 2nd grade for so long!  Then these ideas were written in complete sentences.  The students learned that a sentence is a complete idea with a capital and end mark.  The final page of the book is what the students are looking forward to in 2nd grade.

We conferenced their sentences, and they started working on their own books with illustrations.  Way to go on your very first book of 2nd grade!

Math Stations

 Last week the class learned how we do our math stations in 2nd grade.  A few days a week we break down to small groups in order to better implement the math lesson.  The students go through the stations of see the teacher, math assignment, and a partner station that may include a partner math game, a hands on activity, or an ipad app.  They did a great job!

Sweet Ice Cream Project

 Each year the students create an art project to go with our theme.  This year the class made the cutest ice cream cones!  Check them out in the hallway if you're in the school!

Math About Me

 As we are getting into our math routines, the students worked on "Math About Me."  The numbers on their person were all about them... their age, number of family members, number of pets, favorite number, and even number of teeth lost!  They turned out great!

Learning some Classroom Reading Essentials

 This week in our reading block the students learned how to shop in our classroom library, choose a comfy spot for their reading, and read with a partner. This is all exciting steps in 2nd grade!  We are lucky to have SO MANY books for the kids to pick out for their book boxes.  The kids also enjoy using our comfy pillows and picking out a spot around the room for reading.

Off to a Sweet Start!

 They're finally here!  We had a great first few days of school learning about the routines and expectations of 2nd grade!  In our beginning days together we learned about our morning routine, began our practice of read-to-self, played two math games with a partner, and started our first writing project about what took them so long to get to 2nd grade!

I can already tell that this group of 2nd graders is kind and hard working!  We also started an art project to go with our theme of "Mrs. Howard's Sweet 2nd graders."  We discussed what makes them sweet.  The class had so many kind answers such as, "I help my brother when he needs it."  "I help my mom at home."  "I'm a good listener at school."  "I take care of my dog."  They are definitely a sweet bunch, and I know we will have a great year together!
