Our Cookbook Commercial!

We had a great first week of selling cookbooks!  The class was so excited to see their commercial playing in the commons area!  We will be selling for one more week.  After break we'll then pay back the school for printing supplies, and start picking out items that we need and want and donate money to help someone.  Thanks for all of the support!

Sharing our Personal Narratives and Turkey Bingo

The class finished up their personal narrative writing.  Each student was to choose a true event from their life and add details to this event.  It's great practice for the students to choose their topic, map it out, and then put their details in complete sentences.  We shared with Mrs. Vickerman's first graders.

The class couldn't wait to get started with Turkey Bingo!  I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Decorating our Tree

On Tuesday all the students headed out to the park to decorate their designated tree for the Lanesboro Legion Lights event.  With our class theme being Mrs. Howard's Sweet Students this year, the class made ice cream cones in art class with Mrs. Lieb.  They did a fantastic job!  Our tree is beautiful!

Banana Bingo Celebration #2: Electronic Day

On Friday the students enjoyed our banana bingo party with electronic day.  The class enjoyed meeting up with a friend and playing a few games at the end of our day.

We are Thankful!

In the last few weeks leading up to Thanksgiving we've been discussing what we're thankful for.  These sweet students are thankful for their families, their pets, their friends, and so much more!  They sure love their families.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving 2nd graders.

Thank You Veterans!

Each year we gather in the gym to say thank you to the veterans who have served our country.  Local veterans attend and speak to the students.  The elementary students always sing a song to say thank you.  Thank you veterans!  We appreciate what you've done for our country!

A Few Pictures from Red Ribbon Week

The students enjoyed our dress up days for Red Ribbon Week.  Each Tuesday the class meets with Mrs. Heidi Johnson for social skills.  During this past Tuesday the focus of her lesson was about ways to keep their bodies happy and healthy as it relates to Red Ribbon Week.

First Banana Bingo Celebration

"Banana" is a word used quite often in 2nd grade!  I created this banana bingo system several years ago to help us transition quickly and quietly around our classroom.  Whenever the students hear the word "banana" they are to head right back to their seats without voices.  Each time this is accomplished we earn a "banana point."  Once 5 points are earned a number is drawn and a banana is added to that number on our board.  The students have to work hard to also keep their points.  If at any point the class hears "banana split," voices need to go off in order to keep the points we've accumulated.  The class is always very excited when another banana is added and we get closer and closer to a bingo!  Once we get a bingo, we brainstorm a fun way to celebrate as a class.

We few weeks ago we earned our first Banana Bingo!  As a class we brainstormed many ideas for how we could celebrated, and then we voted.  The class voted on taking a walk on the bunny trail.  We did that earlier in the week and enjoyed this beautiful fall weather on our walk.

Odd and Even Math Monsters

This week we added in a craft to our math to practice odd and even numbers.  The students were given the task of making a monster and then recording the even and odd parts of their math monsters.  This was a fun way to integrate our creativity with our math!

A Special Place to Keep Our Writing

In the last few weeks the students have been finishing up decorating their writing binders.  They brought in pictures and stickers and special items to use to make their writing binder unique and special to them.  The students love sharing pictures of their family and pets with each other.  Their binders also serve as inspiration when they got stuck on a writing topic.  This class especially loves to write, and they are filling their binders full of special moments with the people who cover their binders!

You're Finally Here! Books

We just finished up our books, "You're Finally Here!  What Took You so Long?"  These books were kicked off on the first day of school after reading, "You're Finally Here!" by Melanie Watt.

The students brainstormed their ideas on a bubble map.  They wrote down three things they did this summer that kept them away from 2nd grade for so long!  Then these ideas were written in complete sentences.  The students learned that a sentence is a complete idea with a capital and end mark.  The final page of the book is what the students are looking forward to in 2nd grade.

We conferenced their sentences, and they started working on their own books with illustrations.  Way to go on your very first book of 2nd grade!
